Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has heaped praise on youngster Billy Gilmour following the midfielder’s full debut last night.
The 18-year-old Scotland Under-21 international was handed his first competitive start for the Premier League giants in last night’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Grimsby Town and, as we told you last night, he seriously impressed some supporters.
And it seems the ex-Rangers teenager also impressed his manager too, with Lampard referring to Gilmour as ‘fantastic’ after the 7-1 victory.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website after the game, Lampard said: “The young players have deserved to get into the team.
“From Billy Gilmour it was a fantastic full debut, he ran the game from midfield.
“Marc Guehi was solid and they have deserved their starts from the way the way they train with us and the way they play for the Under-23s.
“They have been outstanding this year.
“The young boys who came on as subs are still really young and they showed their comfort on the ball.
“Now the hard work really begins to try to get in there regularly and show they are worthy of being in the squad.”
Gilmour has already been handed one substitute appearance in the Premier League, in last month’s 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield United – so could we see him given a chance in the weekend’s match at home to Brighton?
And given Cesc Fabregas has also been praising Gilmour over the last 24 hours, do you think Scotland could’ve found the midfield linchpin we’ve been looking for for the past two decades?
