Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has lavished praise on striker Alfredo Morelos by declaring his display against Feyenoord as his best performance since moving to Ibrox.
Gerrard’s side began their Europa League campaign against the Dutch giants in Glasgow, and got off to the perfect start thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
It was Sheyi Ojo who scored the only goal of the match but Morelos has won significant praise from his manager when he faced the media after the full-time whistle, despite failing to find the back of the net.
Of course, it was also an emotional night following the passing of Fernando Ricksen, and Gerrard acknowledged the part played by the raucous home support:
Finally, Gerrard added that defender Nikola Katic was dropped for the tie due to ‘tactical reasons’, as he said via the Sun: “It’s just tactical. Niko’s the type of defender who’s last ditch, aerial, he’s a beast. He’s great in both boxes.
“I predict this will be more of a technical footballing game so we’re looking for more balance on the left side of our defence.
“That’s the reason why Helander’s got the nod. He’s been very patient.
“We spent good money on him, we feel like he’s ready now so it’s an opportunity for him.”
Gerrard, Morelos and the rest of the Rangers squad will now travel to Switzerland to take on Young Boys of Bern in their next group match but, in the meantime, will take on St.Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Sunday.
What do you think of Gerrard’s comments on Morelos, and how far can Rangers go in this season’s competition?
