Neil Lennon Criticises Spanish Referee for ‘Bizarre’ Performance in Rennes v Celtic, Praises His Players

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has criticised Spanish referee Jose Maria Sanchez for his display in this evening’s Europa League opener against Stade Rennes.

The Hoops secured a respectable 1-1 draw against the high-flying Ligue 1 outfit, with Ryan Christie scoring from the penalty spot on the hour mark to cancel out M’baye Niang’s first-half spot-kick.

Whilst there weren’t too many goals, there was no shortage of talking points, with Celtic sub Vakoun Bayo sent off in injury time for a controversial second yellow card.

Referee Sanchez appeared to emphatically gesture there had been no foul, but after complaints from the Rennes players, he brandished a second yellow – and Lennon struggled to contain his annoyance as he sat down with the media after the full-time whistle:

Celtic will face old foes CFR Cluj in their next Europa League group match on October 3 – but how far do you think they could go in this season’s competition?
