Steven Gerrard has defended Borna Barisic amid continued speculation about their relationship.
The Rangers manager spoke to the media this morning following his side’s 1-0 win over Feyenoord in the Europa League last night.
While it was a preview press conference for Sunday’s game away at St Johnstone, much of it focused on the 1-0 victory.
And among other things, Gerrard was asked about Barisic, who started and impressed in the game.
Since signing from Osijek a year ago, Barisic has been in and out of Gerrard’s team – with the Rangers boss apparently unwilling to trust him in certain matches.
Barisic denied there being any issues between him and Gerrard back in August, per The Daily Record.
And now Gerrard has spoken favourably about Barisic and the opinions of outsiders on their relationship.
Gerrard, per Rangers’ official YouTube channel, said: “Borna is the Croatian left-back so he would have played in those pressure games against that level of opponent.
“Borna is a top player. We brought Borna in here for a reason because we feel he could contribute a lot from left.
“I thought his performance was outstanding last night and that should give him a lot of belief and confidence to build on that.
“But Borna is very highly respected within the staff and the dressing room. Other people have obviously got opinions on him, but we don’t really take much notice of that. We just worry about what we see and the belief we’ve got in the player and it’s certainly there.”
