Having been away for a week, there’s a bumper round down to catch up on of what has been happening starting right now…
Two weeks ago, on Saturday the 21st of September in Bournemouth in Manchester Aberdeen’s very own light heavyweight Boris Crighton stopped Jermaine Springer in the 2nd round.
In Rotherham the IBO continental welterweight contest between Anthony Tomlinson and Rob Hunt ended with a TKO won for Tomlinson in the 6th round whilst journeyman Joe Beeden lost to Razaq Najib.
In Derby on the much talked about sanctioning body, the British and Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA), had a bill which saw no WBL title action for any titles as the expected contests were withdrawn or had alternative opponents.
Overseas, in Guateng, South Africa, the IBO cruiserweight title was on the line between Kevin Lerena and Sefer Seferi with Seferi not getting past the 3rd round and getting knocked out by Lerena.
In Charlotte, a certain Mr Chris Glover, the former student of Strathclyde University, who is now a resident in New York, got a first-round knockout win against Knowledge Robinson Speight. How impressive is that!!!
On Sunday the 22nd of September inManchester, middleweight Marcus Morrison knocked out Edwin Palacios in the first round whilst Paul Butler fighting at featherweight got a points win against Joseafat Reyes.
On Friday the 27th of September in The Royal Albert Hall Frank Warren gave us super middleweight Willy Hutchison stopping Borislav Zankov in the 2nd round. The WBO world title fight where Nicola Adams drew against Maria Salinas in a very poor performance and though she kept her belts, increased the scepticism over her right to so do. The Commonwealth top of the bill clash between Daniel Dubois and the poorly matched Ebenezer Tetteh was over before the bar cleared. Dubois knocked him spark out in the first round and it was not a great night of boxing.
Also, on Friday in Glasgow the debut of welterweight Ryan Gall saw him win on points against Gary McGuire, super lightweight Sean McKiddie lost to Daniel Alder, heavyweight Jay MacFarlane lost on points to Josh Sandland and super lightweight Ahmed Ibrahim got a points win against Sean Davis. A very mixed night for the Scottish boxers.
Last weekend saw some incredible action in the USA on Saturday the 28th of September in Los Angeles as the fight for the WBC and IBF welterweight titles between Errol Spence Jr and Shawn Porter was nothing short of a masterclass. Spence Jr nicked it, but this is a contender for fight of the decade...
The WBC super middleweight battle between Anthony Dirrell and David Benavidez was an impressive win for Benavidez who stopped Dirrell in the 9th round. The WBA super lightweight belt was on the line between Mario Barrios and Batyr Akhmedov. Akhmedov hit the canvass twice during the fight as Barrios got the points win.
In Newcastle Thomas Patrick Ward at featherweight beat Yesner Talavera on points whilst last night at York Hall featherweights Tyrone McCullough, David Oliver Joyce, James Dickens, Hairon Socarros, Leigh Wood and Ryan Walsh were all fighting in the Golden Contract MTK promotion. It was a barnstorming bill with McCullagh beating Najib on points, Dickens beating Ramos on points before knockout bonusses were prepared for the winners of Socarros and Walsh and Joyce and Wood – Walsh and Wood claiming them. The winning 4 shall now have the chance to be drawn against each other in the semi finals and given that the Joyce/Wood fight was worthy of a final, this looks a great tournament already.
Also last night in Doncaster Gavin McDonnell at lightweight got a stoppage win against Nathan Kirk!
