Neil Lennon Says It’s Too Soon to Give Mikey Johnston a Senior Scotland Call-up

Celtic boss Neil Lennon reckons it’s slightly too soon for Mikey Johnston to receive a senior Scotland call-up, after the winger was omitted from Steve Clarke’s latest squad.

The 20-year-old winger has evolved into a key player for Lennon and the Hoops this season, and helped set-up a crucial goal in the 2-0 win over arch rivals Rangers on September 1.

However, Johnston hasn’t played for Celtic since after picking up a groin injury at Ibrox, and was overlooked for the Scotland squad picked to face Russia and San Marino in the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Johnston is still waiting on his first full Scotland cap and Lennon is of the opinion that Johnston needs to regain his fitness and develop further before international honours are bestowed.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League clash against Cluj, via the Sun, Lennon said: “He needs consistency of performances and he needs to play a little bit more I think.

“He’s been called up to the 21s which is pleasing from his point of view.

“He does bring an extra dimension to the way we play when he’s fit and sharp. We miss him sometimes.

“But he’s a work in progress and we’re delighted with the progress he’s been making and hopefully we’ll see him sooner rather than later back on the pitch.

“But in terms of Scotland it’s maybe just too soon for him just yet.”

Do you think Johnston is ready for a Scotland call-up?
