Peterborough’s Barry Fry Claims Rangers’ Greg Docherty is Close to Moving to the English Championship

Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is close to joining an English Championship side, according to Peterborough United supremo Barry Fry.

Docherty spent last season on-loan in England’s League One at Shrewsbury Town and became an extremely popular character at New Meadow, scoring an impressive ten goals to help stave off the threat of relegation.

And it seems Peterborough were keen on bringing Docherty back to League One for another stint, with the 23-year-old struggling to get any significant game time under Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

Docherty’s last senior appearance came in the 3-0 League Cup win over East Fife in August, and Posh Director of Football Fry said via the Sun: “Rangers boss Steven Gerrard thought we would be an ideal move for Greg but the player says he has a Championship club to go to.

“We have identified a couple of other targets which we will go for, although there is some hesitation as we don’t want to spoil what is a fantastic team spirit.

“One is a Championship player who could play as a number 10, but I don’t think anything will happen until we’ve played Burnley in the FA Cup.”

The likes of Eros Grezda, Matt Polster and Andy King are all likely to leave Rangers when the transfer window opens, as well as Docherty.

Having already excelled in England’s third tier, perhaps it makes sense for Docherty to try his luck in the Championship, if he does indeed decide to leave Rangers at all next month.

But what do you think? Does the midfielder deserve more of an opportunity with the Gers?
