Virgil Van Dijk Tweets Tribute to ‘Greatest Player’ Cristiano Ronaldo

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has attempted to placate Cristiano Ronaldo this evening by tweeting out a tribute to the Juventus superstar.

As we told you last night, ex-Celtic defender van Dijk raised a few eyebrows during last night’s glitzy Ballon d’Or Awards ceremony in Paris when he insinuated that Ronaldo was never in the running for the prestigious honour.

Van Dijk was clearly speaking in a light-hearted way as he made the jibe and, to be fair, he did end up finishing ahead of Ronaldo in second-place last night, but his comments weren’t received well by everyone.

Ronaldo’s sister launched a stinging attack on the Netherlands skipper after reading the remarks, and even Piers Morgan weighed-in with his two cents online.

But now the man himself appears to have waved a white flag with his latest social media updates this evening:

Fair play, Virgil. Well handled.

But we’re still keen to see how the pair are if Liverpool draw Juventus later this season.

What do you think of the situation?
