5 Players Celtic Could Move For in January

5 Players Celtic Could Move For in January

With the January transfer window now open, Celtic will likely look to strengthen their team.

Neil Lennon’s side came off second best to rivals Rangers on Sunday, losing 2-1 at Celtic Park.

And that seems to have highlighted some areas Celtic might need to improve in over the next month.

Not only are they competing for another treble, they are in the last 32 of the Europa League, facing Copenhagen at the end of February.

So there are plenty of reasons for Celtic strengthening in January.

Here, we look at five potential targets:

Filip Benkovic

Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer have played well as a partnership so far this season, but have struggled at times – with Sunday’s showing against Alfredo Morelos making it clear they could do with someone like the commanding Benkovic. The Croatian centre back hasn’t played a single minute for Leicester City this season so you’d have to assume he’ll look to get out on loan this January. A return to Celtic would surely interest?

Konstantinos Mavropanos

If you haven’t seen the Arsenal defender in action before then we don’t blame you – he’s had just 90 minutes of action this season and made just four appearances last season too. That’s not to say Mavropanos is a bad player though. He’s actually looked very good in the games he’s played for the Gunners and arrived at the club with a big reputation from Greek football. He needs to start playing regularly at a high level and Celtic could offer him that.

Danny Drinkwater

Hear us out! We know Drinkwater has struggled to play for Burnley in the Premier League this season, but this is a league-winning, three-time England international we’re talking about. He earned a £35million move to Chelsea back in 2017 after leading Leicester to an unthinkable league title, but he’s stagnated since. Now, with Burnley set to end his loan this month, we could see Drinkwater going straight back out the door at Chelsea – and Celtic could be a possibility. Lennon needs an alternative to Scott Brown with so many games to come this season and Drinkwater is a very similar option.

Lacina Traore

If you watched Cluj play Celtic last month you would have noticed Traore causing Jullien and Nir Bitton all sorts of problems. He’s a bit of a European journeyman and only returned to Cluj in August after a spell earlier in his career, but is exactly the type of target man Celtic need. He’d fit in with the heavy French-speaking contingent at Celtic Park too.

Victor Wanyama

We couldn’t leave this guy off the list. The Tottenham midfielder is loved by Celtic fans and has long been linked with a return to the club. Given he’s played just four times in the first half of the season, that return talk should intensify this month. If Celtic are looking for a powerful reinforcement in midfield then Wanyama is the man.

Celtic fans – who would you like your side to sign?
