
Wayne Rooney properly announced his return to English football tonight by scoring his first goal for Derby County.
The England and Manchester United all-time top-scorer returned to play for the Championship club officially at the turn of the year, and made his debut in the 2-1 win over Barnsley on January 2.
Rooney’s move to The Rams as a player-coach brought to end a successful stint in MLS with DC United, and many fans could’ve been forgiven for assuming the 34-year-old wouldn’t play too many games for Phillip Cocu’s side.
However, Rooney start this evening’s Championship match away to Luton Town and showed that he still has the hunger to play at a decent level, and he opened the scoring just after the hour mark courtesy of this deflected effort:
It feels sort of strange seeing a player of Rooney’s calibre and experience turning out in the Championship, eh?
