Bizarre Explanation For Why VAR Didn’t Punish Giovani Lo Celso For Late Tackle

A bizarre explanation has been given for why VAR hasn’t punished Giovani Lo Celso for his late tackle on Cesar Azpilicueta.

The Argentine midfielder was involved in a flash point at the beginning of the second half of today’s Premier League game between Chelsea and Tottenham when he raked his studs down the shin of Azpilicueta.

Referee Michael Oliver didn’t punish the tackle at the time and VAR failed to do so either – despite it looking like at least a yellow card for the Spurs midfielder.

The tackle and lack of punishment has led to a strong reaction online – but why exactly has VAR not punished him?

Per BBC’s Mark Chapman, Lo Celso didn’t have anywhere else to put his foot:

Frank Lampard and the Chelsea fans won’t be happy with that explanation.

It’s since been confirmed that VAR have admitted fault when dealing with the issue – and Lo Celso should have been red carded for the tackle.
