After last weekend when it was all about the big guys, tonight Saturday the 29th of February we are in Texas for the WBC Diamond belt fight between Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas. Garcia has talked of a possible fight with Josh Taylor and getting past Vargas would be an impressive start. This is an amazing fight between two great fighters which is much anticipated but for us in the UK, it is not our headline fight.
That is the fight between super flyweight Khalid Yafai who is taking on his former idol, Roman Gonzalez to defend his WBA title. This is dreamlike in so many ways as Khalid Yafai is literally taking on his one time hero. Yafai, our longest serving world champion needs to get past El Chocolito to cement his legacy and I have a funny feeling he may manage it!
We also have flyweight Julio Cesar Martinez taking on a very game and fortunate Jay Harris for the WBC title. This is an opportunity beyond opportunity for the Welshman. Harris is not favoured by many to give us a shock but what a chance he has to cement his name in lights… what a chance!
Also, on the undercard we have at least one big guy, in amongst the wee ones, as heavyweight Joseph Parker is back against Shawndell Winters. It goes without saying the former WBO belt holder needs to win but this is a time in the division where any slip up will be punished, not just in the ring but in negotiations too…
We also have domestically, all over the UK some decent cards and action from Bristol with 10 fights, Bournemouth 8 fights, Maidstone 10 fights and Newcastle 14 fights, whilst Hull will host a further6 fights.
Down in Clacton – on Sea BIBA bring 6 fights including the International Masters super bantamweight fight between Ben Cook and Joseafat Reyes and the WBF European light heavyweight contest between Navid Iran and Ismael Molina Moreno. BIBA have announced an online deal to allow people to watch their fights so you can at least get to see some domestic action this weekend on home soil, should you wish.
On Friday the 6th of March in Leeds there are a further 9 fights to look forward to.
Saturday 7th March
Manchester – WBA international title action between Anthony Fowler and Jack Flatley, heavyweight action between Hughie Fury and Pavel Sour, the WBO intercontinental title fight between super middleweight Zach Parker and Rohan Murdick whilst the EBU light heavyweight belt is on the line between Callum Johnson and Igor Mikhalkin. Top of the bill is super featherweight Scott Quigg back and in against Jono Carroll.
