This weekend there are not a lot of fights out there that have belts attached and we are down to two bills that are in the same fighting city – Belfast!
Tonight, Saturday the 1st of February in the Ulster Hall we have perhaps on paper the most impressive of the two cards with lightweight Gary Cully facing Joe Fitzpatrick for the Ireland national title and super bantamweight David Oliver Joyce in against Lee Haskins for the WBO European strap.
The former seems a straightforward tear up between two domestic fighters who will want to put on a show for their fans whilst the WBO European title fight carries a little more weight in terms of who goes where next. Haskins is a 40 fight veteran and former IBF world title holder so would be, for Joyce, a very decent scalp. Haskins though, is a proud man, was out the ring for a long period of time – never fought in 2018, came back last October and will want to give a decent account of himself. I cannot, though, see past Joyce. As for the Irish battle – who knows but we all want a very decent scrap and as they are both unbeaten with 19 fights in the pro ranks between them we can expect there to be a very decent contest.
Over in the Devenish Complex in Belfast’s fair city, there are a further 10 fights which shall be filled with equally hungry fighters who will be all out to entertain. There may not be any belts in the mix but there will equally be the endeavour, the blood, the sweat and any snotters on the line!
