FLASH BACK

Last week we got a shock result and this week 2020 has continued with not 1 but 2 shock world title wins in a Matchroom USA bill and a further domestic shock win – but not for those who have seen him fight – for a journeyman who came up to Scotland and beat a prospect!

Last Saturday the 25th of January in New York Stephen Fulton and Arnold Khegai shared the ring for what became the WBO intercontinental title and Fulton got his 18th career win by decision.

Later in the week on Thursday the 30th of January in Miami the WBO middleweight title action between Demetrius Andrade and Luke Keeler ended with Andrade stopping a very brave and game Keeler in the 9th round. It was expected that Andrade would be too much for Keeler and so it proved. Andrade now wants Billy Joe Saunders and we would all love to see that…

The rest of the card proved to be far more tricky for the title holders with the IBF super featherweight title action between Tevin Farmer and Joseph Diaz ending with Diaz, who promised he would on Twitter, bringing the belt back home and beating the heavily fancied Farmer. That Diaz won on all the scorecards and suffered a nasty cut in the 2nd round made it all the more impressive. The shocks did not stop there though!

The WBA and IBF unification fight at super bantamweight between Daniel Roman and Mirodjon Akhmadaliev ended with Akhmadaliev taking the belts. Akhmadaliev is the very first Kazakh unified champion and the former Olympian bronze medallist thoroughly enjoyed his win! Like Farmer before him, Roman was expected to have too much for his Kazakh opponent and the shock waves have been wide for this one too.

In the USA Katie Taylor was mentioned after Amanda Serrano managed to beat Simone DeSilva by knockout. Serrano has won world titles in 7 weight divisions and immediately called for the Taylor clash. A few months ago, people were talking about the dearth of female boxers – there now seems to be so many out there and they all seem to want a certain Ms Taylor…

On the same night at the St Andrew’s Sporting Club, Glasgow unbeaten welterweights Martin Harkin and James Moorcroft faced each other and Harkin stopped Moorcroft in the 5th, having had him down in the 2nd round. Lightweight Nathanial Collins was in the ring against Jordan Ellison and scored a points win and then came the shock! In his 201st professional fight, William Warburton beat super welterweight Ryan Gall on points over 4 rounds! I’ve seen Warburton fight and whilst it wasn’t clearly in the script, it was no surprise that any prospect who does not take him seriously might find him a very tasty opponent…

We ended the week on Friday the 31st of January in Glenrothes with flyweight Emma McCulloch takes on Dani Hodges and super featherweight Eftychia Kathopouli takes on Siobhan O’Leary. We await the results being posted by either BBB of C or Boxrec.

Also last night, in Kinshasa the man who lost his crown to Tony Bellew, Ilunga Makabu faced Michal Cielak of Poland for the WBC cruiserweight title and beat him in a points win that sees Makabu back in the mix. With Don King by his side, Makabu can make bigger noises now and I fully expect a career high challenge in the next few weeks being announced for him along with his 88 year old promoter who was last in Kinshasa with a real Rumble in THAT Jungle!
