Odion Ighalo Explains the Slightly Strange Reason Behind Choosing His Man Utd Squad Number

Odion Ighalo Explains the Slightly Strange Reason Behind Choosing His Man Utd Squad Number

New Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo has explained the thinking behind his decision to take the No.25 jersey ahead of making his imminent bow for the Old Trafford club.

Nigerian international Ighalo completed his shock move to the Red Devils on transfer deadline day, revealing via the Mirror that he took a wage cut in order to seal the loan switch until the end of the season.

There are varies squad numbers that are currently still vacant and would’ve perhaps made more sense for Ighalo to wear given his playing position, most notably the No.11.

However, the 30-year-old has instead plumped for 25 – and it turns out it’s all to do with ex-United utility man Quinton Fortune.

The former Watford striker told MUTV. “In Shanghai No 9, it’s not available so I said 24 + 1 is 25, so I said OK let me go for 25 instead of 19.

“I watched Quinton Fortune play for Man Utd, he’s a great player, and I know he put on 25. So I said 25 is good even though I didn’t get the number I was looking for. Twenty-five is a perfect number. One above what I wore before when I was in the Premier League.

Fortune was always a reliable member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad during his seven years at the club, winning a Premier League winner’s medal in 2003 but is he really deserving of such a tribute?

What do you think of Ighalo’s comments?
