With no margin for error in their title race with bitter rivals Celtic, it looked like the Ibrox club were heading for all three points at half-time after Scott Arfield’s impressive opener after half-an-hour.
But a nervousness crept into the Gers’ display as the second-half roared on, and two late goals from Stephen O’Donnell and Eamon Brophy handed Killie all three points and consigned their opponents to a defeat that leaves their hopes of winning the Premiership by a thread.
Speaking to BT Sport after the full-time whistle, Gerrard conceded that he was responsible for the loss, and insisted that the buck stopped with him – but he also said his players simply couldn’t handle the pressure and defended like schoolboys:
