John Hartson Reckons Rangers Should Consider Conceding the Title if the Season Can’t be Restarted

Former Celtic striker John Hartson says Rangers should consider conceding the Scottish Premiership title to their arch rivals if the campaign can’t be restarted due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Hoops are 13 points clear of Steven Gerrard’s Gers in the race to be crowned champions, albeit with the Ibrox club having played a game less, and both teams were scheduled to square-off in the latest instalment of the Old Firm derby last weekend.

However, the Covid-19 crisis put paid to all football across the UK, and indeed most of the world, and it remains to be seen when the season will be up and running once again.

Hartson, who won three titles, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup during his five-year stay at Parkhead, reckons he has a solution to the problem – but it would involve one half of the Glasgow giants swallowing an awful lot of pride.

Speaking via the BBC, the ex-Wales international explained: “I think they would come out of it with huge respect and gratitude.

“Rangers would come away with an awful lot of credit if they were to say ‘you have been worthy champions, you have a massive lead’.

“I can honestly say I’d be saying exactly the same if Rangers had the lead. Celtic have got to probably lose five of their last eight games to be overtaken. Let’s be realistic, that isn’t going to happen.

“It would be an incredible thing to do for Rangers, but like everyone else I don’t expect them to.

“It would be a commendable thing to do, but I’m not naive.

“This is their prerogative and if they wanted to play all the games, that’s fine. You’ve got a similar problem at the bottom with teams going for places and the money that comes with that.

“Celtic would not want Rangers to do that, they wouldn’t want to be handed it, but common sense has to prevail.”

What do you think of Hartson’s suggestion? Is there any chance this could ever happen?
