Frank Lampard raved about Billy Gilmour following his man of the match performance for Chelsea last night.

The Blues manager handed the 18-year-old Scottish midfielder a start for the visit of Liverpool to Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup.

And he didn’t regret it, with Gilmour barely putting a foot wrong in a 2-0 victory that puts Chelsea through to the quarter-finals.

Gilmour is rightly being praised by supporters and pundits alike for his performance, but the backing from his manager will mean more than anything.

Lampard spoke to Chelsea TV after the match and expressed his delight at Gilmour’s display:

For Gilmour, that will be a huge boost to his confidence – and shows the manager trusts him.

Chelsea next play Everton on Sunday in the Premier League and it looks like Gilmour could be in line for a start with a number of players injured or unavailable.

Then Gilmour may allow himself to dream that he could be involved in Scotland’s squad for the Euro 2020 playoffs, starting against Israel later this month.
