Full Stop – MMMMASTER STROKES?

Full Stop – MMMMASTER STROKES?

There have been a few. Right now Dillian Whyte is much in the boxing news and he had a quick foray into it. We have even seen that unassuming chap from Ireland, Mr MacGregor doing it and even suggesting doing it again, whilst the new WBC heavyweight champion of the wuuuuurld, Tyson Fury has been videod doing some training for it…

What? Crossing from one serious combat sport to another…

No matter why people will want to try their hand and fists at something else I can but think that right now, being stuck in the house for a prolonged time can make you go a little… well it can make you go… Well…

MMA/Boxing crossovers are always good news for debate and the most recent one I have seen is also one of the most intriguing. It’s not about Floyd Mayweather or even Mike Tyson but the darling of Women’s Boxing and the woman known as “The Cyborg”.

Cris Cyborg is a fearsome sight. Currently in the Bellator version of all out fighting, she has actually been registered to box since 2017. A potential fight with none other than Katie Taylor, in a boxing ring, has been touted. But could they meet in an octagon instead?

It’s an intriguing thought and to be honest highly unlikely. Cyborg fights at around featherweight whilst Taylor is, when light, around light middleweight so it is highly quite fanciful.

It doesn’t stop the speculation though…

Taylor has been talking of her desire to cement her legacy and such an eye catching spectacle would add to fights against Celia Braekhaus, Amanda Serrano – her next fight – and the return match with Delfine Persoon; the first one having gone so badly in Madison Square Gardens for the affable Irish heroine – not the only fight that night that did not go as expected…

More likely to tempt Taylor into an octagon would be a contest with another of Bellator’s big name female stars – Holly Holm. Holm is closer in weight and has held versions of boxing female world titles but again … in an octagon?

Crossovers from one code to another is not wholly made of dreamworld style fantasy and there are many times that I find myself reflecting and reporting on a former kickboxer or wrestler who is a boxer. I suppose for some fighting is just that – fighting. Once you get into a code of it you will go with the one that was first in your loves of regulated fighting, I suppose.

What has turned it into idle speculation is that money has made it far more enticing and therefore a serious topic for discussion…

When Connor McGregor took on Mayweather Jr in the boxing ring and acquitted himself well, there was a taste for it that will never now go away. It was the second highest grossing fight in history – plaudits for McGregor or pitiful for boxing?

Whether Mayweather can be tempted out of retirement is doubtful but what about a four way competition with Manny Pacquiao and Khabib Nurmagomedov? It has been suggested this could be in either code but again it feels unlikely as the Filipino senator seems most unlikely to go into an octagon. McGregor would therefore surely be unlikely to don the gloves and take on another big boxing star – or would he?

What about Claressa Shields, who has made massive noises about being someone who would be well suited to take on anybody anywhere? The cash that a fight for her against Amanda Nunes might just dwarf what could be made in female boxing and this looks like a possible contest. Perhaps even the most likely.

Then we have Tyson Fury. He has done the wrestling thing, can he do the MMA thing? He has talked of making his MMA debut soon and then talked of how being taken to the ground by a decent wrestler would be a problem. Stipe Miocic or Francis Ngannou have been quoted as possible opponents.  With Fury it is best to sit back, wait and see – predict nothing and expect anything…

As we come out of lockdown it remains to be seen if there is any appetite for anything other than the purity of each code or the money to support any crossovers. There is a clear desire for something though and the way the world is at the moment, I am not ruling out Katie Taylor in WWE taking on Tyson Fury for a Manny Pacquiao dream final fight… Is it time to leave the house yet?
