Full Stop – Will ye no come back again…

Full Stop – Will ye no come back again…

You put your right foot in…

Your big mask on…

Right Foot in, And yer ready for the fight…

You take a COVID 19 test…

And all’s all right

BUT we shan’t be having the boxing event…

Or so it seems as the event under the auspices of the WBA that was due to happen this weekend has been scrapped. Due to happen in the Dominican Republic, a couple of regional WBA belts were going to be on the line, and this appeared to be the real restart of boxing worldwide. As we all know we have been starved of any action for AGES now, so this was going to be a welcome return after the MMA return a week or so ago.

According to a report on the World Boxing News website, the WBA had cleared their own sanitation standards, gone through their agreed health processes but at the request of the Dominican government they agreed to shelve the event.

But worry not, the return is now around the corner… Las Vegas and Bob Arum are looking at June the 9th

Also, in the US, Houston have an advertised card for next Friday, June the 5th. It is perhaps a clue as to what is likely to come as the fights are mainly lesser boxers and there is an absence of titles on the line. There are 7 fights on the card including a couple of journeymen at super flyweight.

On Saturday there is the return of European action in Venna, Austria with three fighters looking for opponents including middleweight Marcos Nader who has only lost one out of twenty three.

Meanwhile in Beijing, home country of blame for all of this pandemic malarkey, four fights are due on Saturday and a further four on Sunday – mainly debutants.

In Mexico on Saturday four experienced campaigners are in play, this time up against journeymen to get their hands back in gloves and their feet back on canvass but with little by way of jeopardy – or is there?

Finally, in Kansas there are 10 professional fights and 2 bare knuckle boxing matches in a very full card that suggests they may have less of a lockdown than the rest of the world… as if we didn’t know…

And so, boxing looks likely to be on its way back. We have small shows, lesser known names and back in business contests rather than competitive fights. Of course, the idea that people can just get back after such a lengthy lay off and be in shape and have the timing for any fight is dangerous nonsense if you believe it – we might have some evidence to scrap over come Monday though… doesn’t that sound nice…
