FLASH BACK

Last week didn’t quite have it all but it certainly brought into sharp focus the issues with which boxing is likely to be faced as at least one highlight never got into the ring.

In Moscow, on Monday the 15th June the WBA continental super lightweight title fight between Khariton Agrba and Manuk Dilanyan saw Agrba manage a ten round unanimous decision in only his fourth professional fight – meaning we got to know a name that is one to keep an eye on…

Then on Tuesday the 16th June boxing headed in Nevada to Las Vegas with the MGM Grand playing host to super bantamweight Joshua Greer Jr losing to Mike “Magic” Plania with a majority points win. Before the fight Greer Jr was ranked by the WBO as number 1, the IBF as number 2 and the WBC as number 7 and he hot the canvass twice in a fight that was scored well by the end though Greer Jr did rally late – meaning we got a controversial decision that is one to keep debating…

The other notable fight on the night, at welterweight unbeaten Giovani Santillan, got another majority decision, this time over 43 fight veteran, Antonio DeMarco. Former WBC champion, DeMarco was narrowly beaten but this was not as clear cut as the previous fight – meaning we got to see a fading veteran with a career that is one to keep reminiscing over…

Last Thursday the 18th June we were back in Las Vegas BUT the fight between super lightweight and former WBO, IBF and IBO world champion Jose Pedraza and Mikkel LesPierre was postponed as LePierre’s manager tested positive for Covid-19meaning we got a fight that was supposed to happen but was one that never did…

It left lightweight Gabriel Flores Jr with the limelight and a unanimous win against Josec Ruiz to fill the headlining void – meaning we got one that might be worth a relook or we shall forget it pretty quickly…

All in all – not a bad week for the sport – meaning one that shall be quickly forgotten…
