After a couple of weeks or so of great domestic action this is a week where have to hold onto our hats for it to arrive at the tail end of the week!
Until then tonight, Saturday the 8th of August in Savonlinna, Finland we have action for the lightweight EBU title between Edis Tatli and Gianluca Ceglia. There will be an expectation that the home fighter will be triumphant here but again the number of fights happening with real battles and the sport realising that they need spectacle and not just easy wins makes it an intriguing contest that might just surprise us.
There is certainly plenty of opportunity for surprises tonight in Marbella, Spain with the super featherweight John Carter taking on Ibon Larringa for the EBU title. There is also the super welterweight action between veteran of the ring, Tyrone Nurse taking on Kerman Lerraga, in a non title fight that Nurse hopes to win and become the first British fighter to beat Lerraga – there have been a few who have found the Spaniard better than someone who would just lie down on anyone’s resume. It is a belter of a couple of contests and I am really looking forward to both results coming through – no idea who is likely to win either but Nurse, who I watched beat Willie Limond in Glasgow a few years back has not managed to match his promise and this might be a fight that brings his career right back into the limelight.
Also, tonight in Los Angeles, we have world title action at welterweight between Jamal James and Thomas Dulorme for the interim WBA title and for the super middleweight interim WBA title between David Morell and Lennox Allen. I am going to play safe and think both James and Morell take the titles but this as I have said earlier is an interesting time in the sport and you never know…
During the week, on Wednesday the 12th of August in South Kirkby, we have our very own super lightweight Craig MacIntyre facing a dangerous and very live opponent in Darren Surtees, welterweight Sahir Iqbal taking on Maredudd Thomas for the WBC Youth title and lightweight Jono Carroll is back to face Maxi Hughes. This, outside of the highly hyped, BT studio and Matchroom cards is a cracking series of fights and whilst I hope MacIntyre pulls it off it is going to be tough, Iqbal and Carroll look like they have decent contests but should pull through, you just never know…
At the tail end of the week on Friday the 14th of August we are back to Eddie’s with super bantamweight Shannon Courtenay in to face Rachel Ball, super middleweight John Docherty taking on Anthony Fox, super welterweight Kieron Conway taking on Navid Mansouri for the WBA international title and super featherweight Zelfa Barrett is in against Eric Donovan. This is another decent undercard and whilst Courtenay, given the amount of focus on women’s boxing just now will be expected to shine here, Docherty will be expected to get through, Conway and Barrett face tough fights. There have been no real one sided contests above the first couple of fights on the Matchroom cards and these could be true crackers of fights with all four away fighters getting the opportunity to impress and get onto future cards. I expect that either the Conway contest or the Barrett battle could end up fight of the night contenders.
Top of the bill is yet another fire cracker. It has a lot to live up to following the Eggington/Cheeseman scrap or the draw between Harper and Jonas but we have middleweight Felix Cash back to take on Jason Welborn. This is a real battle that ought to be the best of the night and show once again that the return of boxing is on the right trajectory – let’s hope that no matter who wins, they are truly made to battle for that win!
Saturday 15th August
