Tonight, in the USA and on UK soil, boxing is in for a treat. Let us begin with the UK as it shall be first up.
Matchroom have brought back our own version of the beast from the (north) east as Lewis Ritson returns, tonight Saturday the 17th October in Peterborough. Before we get there, we have super bantamweight Qais Ashfaq taking on Marc Leach as the Olympian takes a bit of a step up against an opponent who had trouble making his new weight – Leach was coming up in weight! Ashfaq has the skills, though to be boxing at a far higher level.
Super bantamweight Thomas Patrick Ward goes into battle against the experienced Thomas Essomba, and Ward shall get tested against a hardy fighter, but we know he has the quality to come through. Top of the bill, was always going to be the return of Ritson against former world title challenger, Miguel Vazquez for the WBA intercontinental title. We do need to remember that Vazquez has losses on his record to Josh Taylor and Ohara Davies so Ritson is going up the scale, but it is a measurement against which he needs to perform. You just get the impression though he is more than ready for this…
Then we are over in the Bob Arum’s Bubble in Las Vegas where the much vaunted where the highly anticipated showdown between Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez shall head a bill that cannot get any better than its main event. It is for WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight titles and this is simply mouth-watering. Two fighters, trained by their fathers, in for three of the four major belts and both of them highly skilled and massively motivated. I am a huge Loma fan, but I know this might be tough. Eddie Hearns says Loma wins every round; I am not so sure…
Also, on the same evening in Germany we have the interim WBC, WBF and IBA female world title fight at middleweight as Ema Kozin takes on Chris Namus. On the same bill we also have the welterweight clash between Jessica Schadko and Katelynn Phelan for the WBC youth, WBF and IBA belts. We are all getting used to the names at the top of the female boxing tree so these are fighters I am unfamiliar with but with so many belts on the line including from a couple of sanctioning bodies that are not known much either this catches the eye.
There is also a BIBA bill on Fite TV which includes 7 fights from their headquarter fight venue in Aberdeen which shall include Scotland’s own Lee McAllister fighting at super welterweightagainst Edwin Palacios.
On Sunday the 18th October in South Kirkby, MTK are back and in a small hall series that has brought a lot of great action and newsworthy fights we have bantamweight Paul Butler in the ring against Ryan Walker whilst flyweight Jay Harris takes on Marcel Braithwaite for the Commonwealth title. I think we shall see a Butler/Harris double but…
Later on in the week we shall have on Friday the 23rd of October in Mexico City, a terrific bill with super flyweight Roman Gonzalez taking on Israel Gonzalez for the WBA super title, super flyweight Juan Francisco Estrada awaits an opponent for the WBC title and there is the same news in the flyweight contest for Julio Cesar Martinez for the WBC and IBO titles as he awaits a new guy to step into the ring with him. It’s a feast for the little guys and should be something we hope to gorge on later in the week!
Saturday 24th October
Sergey Lipinets v Custio Clayton for the interim IBF title at welterweight.
