And those feelings of resentment appear to have resurfaced this week, with the France international being handed the captain’s armband at the Stade Velodrome.
Payet completed a move to the Premier League in 2015 and quickly became West Ham’s star performer, becoming the 38th recipient of the West Ham United Player of the Year award.
However, it wasn’t to last as the 30-year-old became unsettled and appeared to refuse to play for Slaven Bilic as he attempted to force a return to Ligue 1.
Needless to say Payet’s actions still don’t sit well with the Hammers faithful, with the majority describing the midfielder as a “snake” when Marseille confirmed him as their new skipper:

You have captains like Steven Gerrard then you have a captain like Payet who goes on strike refuses to play and acts like a 10 year old ????

A guy who left you for a pay rise then rejoined by going on strike? Seems like a good role model to me ??

It seems unlikely that Hammers fans will ever forgive Payet for the way he left the club.
However, with Bilic bringing in Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart and Javier Hernandez this summer, good times could be about to return to the London Stadium.
