Explained: What Celtic and Rangers Have to Do This Season to Get Two Champions League Spots

Celtic and Rangers are on the verge of helping Scotland gain another Champions League qualification spot.

Both teams are likely to be involved in the Europa League knockout stages – with Celtic already there and Rangers just a point away from reaching the last 32.

It’s been a very successful campaign for both and that’s why Scotland now sit on the verge of regaining another Champions League spot.

Celtic have only lost once in Europe this season and it came in the Champions League playoffs when Cluj beat them 4-3 at Celtic Park.

They were unbeaten in five going into that game and have followed it up by winning six and drawing one in the Europa League.

For Rangers, they’ve played 13 times in the Europa League this season and only lost once, going down 2-1 to Young Boys earlier in the group campaign.

Given their strong performance this season, the Scottish Premiership now sits 15th in the top 15 leagues in Europe – and if they are still within that 15 at the end of the season then the league will gain another Champions League qualification place.

This has all been laid out by ESPN’s Dale Johnson, who explains what Celtic and Rangers need to do to remain in the top 15:

That is a great summary of what exactly Scottish teams have to keep doing to remain among the big European competitions.

And hopefully both Celtic and Rangers can get the necessary European wins this season to rubber stamp their place in the top 15 and gain that extra Champions League qualifying spot.
